Where there might be a choice, tired old offices being recycled has to be explored as an option. Redevelopment (and repurposing) is always preferable where possible.
Instead of buying new materials, companies can reuse old building parts to slash emissions. In a process now widely being dubbed as “urban mining” materials can be re purposed for other projects. This WIRED UK article highlights a London office building from the 80’s, no longer “fit for purpose”. The immense steel frame in this office has now been dismantled and used in two other new projects, both in London.
Using assets and resources wisely – whether buildings, interiors or land – all needs careful consideration.
